How to code Postoperative Ileus ICD 10
Ileus can be an expected outcome of a surgery or procedure which will not require any treatment and will resolve on its own within a day or two. In such scenarios if there is no documentation of any treatment for the Ileus then it should not be coded. If there is documentation of some type of treament for ileus like gastric intubation then it should be coded as postoperative complication. If the documentation is not clear as to if it is postoperative complication or an expected outcome of surgery or procedure then a query should be issued to the physician.
